Planting 2022

Planting season 2022 saw 5,100 plants in the ground spread over a number of sites. Our main Coastwest project this year was in the dunes in front of Grant Marine Park and we planted 2,500 seedlings here. Another 1,500 were planted at last year’s site between Pearse and Salvado Streets. The growth in this site over one year has been excellent despite a very hot summer.

We are now pretty efficient with our planting efforts and having Greenskills “pre dig” the holes with our auger makes an enormous difference. Our energetic team of local volunteers also had some great help from Stantec and the Actuarial team from PWC. They both managed to plant over 1000 plants in about 2 hours – impressive! CBC and Christ Church Grammar School also came along to do some planting. They have been working with us on other tasks such as weeding and mulching.

In June we held our community planting day for National Tree Day sponsored by The Seedling Bank.  We had lots of helpers of all ages and from far and wide. These days are always great fun and good for meeting new people.

All the sites that are planted are prepared with hours of work weeding and mulching so the seedlings have the best chance of survival. And our success also depends on our wonderful specialist nursery suppliers Nuts about Natives and Apace, who grow our beautiful plants mostly from local seed collected by Coastcare or from cuttings.

And our sponsors  Coastwest and The Seedling Bank via Planet Ark supported us with funding for our plants.

None of this would be possible without the ongoing commitment of our core of regular volunteers and our committee. Thank You!
