Nitraria billardieri

Scientific name

Nitraria billardieri

Common name

Nitre Bush

Plant description

Only one plant has been discovered in Cottesloe growing on limestone rocks at the beach edge. Cottesloe Coastcare volunteers have taken cuttings and in 2019 new shrubs should be growing. An interesting plant with fleshy leaves, some spines and intricate branches which can spread to 2 metres high. Birds are attracted to the purple, or sometimes red berries. The branching habit may be an adaption to high winds.
