Coastcare for Singles May 2014
‘Coastcare for Singles’ was great fun and an extraordinary effort by more than 30 people in the rain and wind on the central Cottesloe foreshore. You will see in the photo I took for the media that Trinity college students from UWA were jumping for joy in the sunshine – in anticipation of the day. James McGhee had polished his cute red mini and the RSVP’s were coming in well. 1000 local plants had been grown from seed that we collected along the Cottesloe beach front and food for 45 people ordered.
However,early on the morning of Saturday 24th May the weather was not good at all. The marquee couldn’t be erected as the wind was too strong and the caterers were worried that no one would arrive – I was a bit worried too!
At 10am, ‘Registration time’ 30 ‘Singles’ turned up braving the weather to do something worthwhile and maybe meet a new friend or two. The official poster states ‘Meet new people and maybe even the partner of your dreams with Coastcare for Singles. So…do you plant here often? You’ve heard of speed dating, well this is speed planting!

Yoga teacher, Susie Ascott warmed us up with a short yoga session, Craig explained how the planting would be done, Mike gave a planting demo with our tried and true ’deep planting method’ then we all got to work. Everyone kept their spirits up despite rain showers and strong gusty wind.

By 1.30pm the wonderful workers had planted 1000 seedlings, beautifully and watered them in well. We shared a great lunch and there were a few phone numbers changing hands. A raffle of donated gloves and trowels from Bunnings Cottesloe ended the ‘wild and woolly’ but very successful day.
