Coastcare and natural resources management

AUSMEPA - stands for Australian Marine Environment Protection Association. It has lots of free resources for teachers and students about the sea and beaches and how to look after our marine environment. Good for kids

Caring for our Country - is the Australian government's natural resources management program and includes the Community Coastcare program.

Coastcare. Currently there are 60,000 active Coastcare volunteers in 2,000 Coastcare groups all around Australia. Here you can find details of all these groups and their work ... and don't forget to check out Caring for Cottesloe.

Coastcare in the KIA is a partnership that works in the Kwinana area to improve the coastal and marine environments. Corals, quandongs and sea grasses are among the topics covered.

Coastwest - a Western Australian government program that provides grants for projects to improve the condition and amenity of the coastal zone in Western Australia.

Conservation Volunteers Australia - welcomes everyone with a love of the outdoors and an interest in the environment and often help us with our projects.

Dept. of Environment Coasts and Oceans - information about the coastal and marine legislation, policies and programs from the Australian Government Department of the Environment and Water Resources.

Friends of Shenton Bushland - activities and events of the group looking after a piece of remnant bush in Shenton Park.

Joondalup Community Coastcare Forum - is a community organisation acting as a reference group for coastal issues within the City of Joondalup, in northern metropolitan Perth.

Landcare - is a partnership between the community, government and business to 'do something practical' about protecting and repairing our environment.

Marine and Coastal Community Network - works to conserve marine biodiversity in Australia.

Perth Region NRM - a community-led group that coordinates and delivers natural resource management in the Perth Region. Cottesloe is part of this region. Previously the Swan Catchment Council.

Save Mosman Parks - a neighbouring community group that is working to save their local parks and natural bushland.

Save Underwood - protecting the Underwood Avenue bushland.

South Coast Management Group is made up of coastal planners, managers & community delegates working along the South Coast of Western Australia. Their Coastal Management Specification Manual: a guide for the construction of coastal management infrastructure is being updated and worth a look.

Swanbourne Coastal Alliance - a group of local residents seeking to preserve public access to the coast and protect the coastal environment.

About insects - a great site from the entomologists at CSIRO. Lots of information and some good games for kids.

Alcoa Frog Watch - is dedicated to providing information on all aspects of Western Australian frogs and tells you how to build a frog friendly garden. Good for kids.

AQWA information sheets - about marine creatures from the Aquarium of Western Australia. Good for kids.

Birds Australia - is dedicated to the conservation, study and enjoyment of Australia's native birds and their habitats. The Birds in Backyards section is fascinating and includes a bird finder to help you identify birds.

Birds Australia Western Australia - includes excellent bird guides for metropolitan and country WA. Cottesloe Coastcare and Birds WA have produced a booklet called Birds of the Leighton Peninsula - available from the local councils and the local Library.

Butterfly gardening - how to grow food plants for West Australian butterflies.

Explore - from the Australian Museum. Lots of resources on Australian animals - includes animals found in Eastern Australia as well as Western Australia. Good for kids.

Faunabase - from the Western Australian Museum - lets you search for amphibians, birds, fishes mammals and reptiles.

Save our whales - Australian waters are home to more than 45 species of whales and dolphins. This site from the Australian government has lots of resources and includes a section for kids.Good for kids.

Plants

Apace Nursery - supports Cottesloe Coastcare by growing our local plants from seed and plant material collected in Cottesloe's natural areas.

Florabase - detailed information on Western Australia’s plants from the West Australian Herbarium.

Grow Us A Home - a great site from Greening Australia (WA) that has lots of interesting information about biodiversity. It has an interactive map showing different soil types and how our coastline has changed over time. Good for kids.

Padil - stands for Pests and Diseases Image Library. It is a huge database of pictures of invasive pests and diseases.

Weedbusters - works with communites to make people aware of the damage caused by weeds. Weedbusters Week is held each October.

Western Weeds - a terrific resource that includes pictures and descriptions of most of the weeds that are rampant in our natural areas.
