Plantguards: Pros and cons

‘To bag or not to bag’ - this is the question we ask ourselves each time we plant seedlings. After 10 years of experience CCA volunteers have learnt some of the pros and cons of using plant guards. Also read an update (November 2009) about a plant guard which became a death trap for a snake!

Saving Silky scaevola

Many Cottesloe plant species are under threat locally. CCA is determined to build up the numbers of these plants, so that we will not lose more species in our area. There was only one Silky scaevola plant left – but now we have 8, with more being propagated.

Fun, learning, seed collecting and quandongs

Read about various summer activities plus the CCA quandong project. Cottesloe’s few remnant quandongs have not had any seed for several years so we removed a few root suckers, grew them in pots and in June 2009 planted 6 at Grant Marine Park.

83 year old friend Doug Mickle must be Cottesloe’s most consistent and dedicated coast-carer! He collects rubbish on Cottesloe beach and has been doing it for years – rain and shine.

Cottesloe Primary & Conservation week

During Conservation Week in 2008 Cottesloe Primary year 4’s joined Cottesloe Coastcarers to share ideas about the Conservation week theme of water use. We had a local plants exercise and the student’s work sheets can be seen on the blog.
